Update from the Outreach Mission
Sixteen parishioners attended the Mission Outreach Committee meeting on Sunday, Oct. 14th, between the services. In addition to approving a third quarter transfer of $800 to support our partner parish in Haiti, two important initiatives were approved and are underway:
(1) St. Margaret’s Volunteer Teams. St. Margaret’s is committing its human resources to assist four groups, Toddlers’ Playdate, the Soap Closet, the Belfast Soup Kitchen, and the Game Loft, for at least the next 9 to 12 months. (This assistance is in addition to our church’s ongoing commitment to the Greater Belfast Area Ministerium’s (GBAM) Food Cupboard.) Parishioners will be contacted in the next few weeks and asked to volunteer approximately three hours once or twice per month to one of the four groups. There will be a job description for each of the volunteer opportunities; choose your favorite and work together with some of your fellow parishioners as we get to know each other and our community’s needs. Your commitment need not be for more than 4 to 6 months. A sign-up board will also be available on the time and talent table in the parish hall. Please see the announcement below about helping prepare food for the Game Loft on Friday, Nov. 2nd.
(2) Use of the Trauger Funds. Approximately $27,000 remains from the Vestry’s allocation to the committee of Ruth Trauger’s bequest to St. Margaret’s. The Vestry made the original allocation at the end of 2005; the committee has expended some of the funds to assist start up of Toddlers’ Playdate, Habitat for Humanity, and Restorative Justice. The committee decided that it should solicit proposals from community service organizations for how the organization might utilize all or part of the funds to initiate new programs. Steve Malmberg, Meg Malmberg, Ed Williams, and Alden Johnson agreed to begin drafting the Request for Proposals and to propose a timeline for the entire process. This is the first step in a many-step process that will involve the committee, the Vestry, and the entire parish at various points. All of us should pray for wisdom in discernment and decision making as St. Margaret’s undertakes this effort.
The next meeting of the Mission Outreach Committee will be on Sunday, Nov. 11th, between the services. All parishioners are invited to attend whether or not they intend to join the committee permanently.
