Advent Adult Education Series
This Advent season Paul Mazur will facilitate our discussion around two texts we tend to take for granted: the Bible, and the Book of Common Prayer. We’ll look at old and new translations of the Bible, see portions of an exhibit of the Gutenberg Bible, and talk about cultural and literary influence of the Book of Common Prayer. Please join us for a lively and interesting exploration of these foundational texts.
1. Advent 2, Sunday Dec. 9 at 9 a.m. What we think we know (and don’t) about what the Bible says
Translations old (what do they really say?) and new (and why we need them), how moods and tenses nuance interpretation.
2. Advent 3, Sunday Dec 16 at 9 a.m. The Making of the King James Version
Featuring slides from an exhibit Paul went to last Spring on the Gutenberg Bible
3. Advent 4, Sunday Dec 23 at 9 a.m. The Book of Common Prayer at 350 (did you know it influenced Shakespeare?)
Recent articles in the Boston Globe and the New Yorker highlight the enduring and surprising influence of our prayer book.
