This year’s Peace Festival at the waterfront in Belfast on August 28-29 has a full schedule of events, plus opportunities for all ages to participate in activities leading up to the actual event. Workshops are being held at With Breath Puppetry in downtown Belfast for anyone to consider where their seeds of peace lie, create a banner, or help make life size puppets for the festival and parade. It is time for a parade in Belfast, and here it is – on Saturday, August 29. Anyone interested in making signs or small puppets Parade posterand participating can come to Waterfall Arts at 254 High St. at 9AM that morning where materials will be provided to make your own creations. Or the public is invited to see the parade en route beginning 10AM at Waterfall Arts, proceeding down High St. to Main St, then down to the Harbormaster’s Building and across the Harbor Walk to the Boat House where activity continues throughout the day. Large puppets, signs for peace, drumming and community fun for all will mark the parade route.
The Belfast Peace Festival kicks off on Friday night with a live musical broadcast by WERU for an outdoor dance party at the Boat House at Steamboat Landing. Activities begin early on Saturday with yoga and meditation and the parade. A puppet pageant and collaboration with Dances for Universal Peace late morning will welcome everyone to Steamboat Landing along with a ukulele tutorial by Frets Halligan.
This year workshops in the afternoon will feature Peggy Smith on Non-Violent Communication, Seeds of Peace and Peace Jam. An afternoon of children’s activity, music, a labyrinth, and an assortment of food and product vendors is open to all. There is no charge for admission to any part of the festival. Portland’s renowned singer/songwriter Lynn Deeves and local musicians close out the festival Saturday evening with a free concert.
The entire festival is free and open to the public. Donation are welcome to cover expenses; become a Peace Dove NOW with a donation of $15.
