Cuban potluck coming up!
Is St. Margaret’s potluck supper on your calendar for next Saturday night (August 13)? Dinner starts at 6. Any dish or dessert is welcome, of course, but we are focusing on Cuban specialties, like the famous Cuban sandwich made of lightly buttered bread layered with roast pork, thinly sliced Serrano ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles and yellow mustard.
Another Cuban sandwich is the “Elena Ruz”. According to Wikipedia, Elena Ruz was a young society debutante in the 1930s who would stop at El Carmelo, a popular restaurant and confectionery shop in Havana after an evening at the opera or a social function, and would ask the waiter if he would fix her a sandwich to her orders. It is prepared on white or Cuban bread, with a layer of cream cheese on one slice, a layer of strawberry jam or preserves on the other, and thin slices of turkey breast in between. A platter of those would be easy to prepare.
Please remember to bring your own beverages. If you have recorded Cuban music, bring that, too! It’s a party.
