Men of St. Margaret’s

December MOMS

The December meeting was held at the usual site — the parish hall, and well attended: 14, including new participant Chris Scott, who was also the presenter. (We were particularly pleased that Fred Whaley was also able to get time away from rehab in order to attend.)

Reverend Chris was ordained years ago in Glasgow, Scotland, and he spoke on Christmas customs in places where he’d lived, Northern Europe and Hawaii — quite the contrast in style! Our chef was Lou Pelletier. Bob Whidden read a poem he’d written at a long-ago Christmas.

Next month: John Gregory, speaking on newer directions in prostate cancer screening & treatment.

MOMs’ November Meeting at Harbor Hill

November’s MOMS meeting was held off-site, at the Harbor Hill Center, where Fred Whaley is currently housed for additional rehab, following recent hospitalization. Staff at Harbor Hill graciously set aside their library space for our meeting.
The discussion topic, coming the day after Veterans Day, was long-term mental health effects among veterans of current and past wars. An opinion piece, written by Timothy Kudo, a Marine veteran who served in Afghanistan, entitled “On War and Redemption”  was the springboard for some deep discussion, and sharing of experiences.

MOM’s September meeting

The September meeting was held off-campus — at Darby’s, on the Eve of 9/11. There was no planned program, but after a moment of silent commemoration, and over breakfast, members shared personal experiences of that day.
Even in the small group of only nine attendees, several had proximate connection to the WTC attacks at least: John Gregory, returning from Philadelphia was caught up in the enormous traffic snarls on the New Jersey side; Alden Johnson officiated in a wedding ceremony in Waltham, Massachusetts several weeks after those events, a wedding in which multiple invited guests were absent — perished in the towers; and Larry Theye read from his stepson’s eyewitness account of the first 48 hours, beginning with the strike on the North Tower.
