Readings for Sunday worship
Beginning on Sunday, January 15, and for approximately 7 weeks, we will have a single service on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. This year our service will follow a theme of creation, science and wonder. We will use as the foundation of our exploration the book The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science and the Ecology of Wonder by William P. Brown. The Christian Century had this to say about the book: “Brown’s study of the seven creation texts of the Old Testament presents exquisite biblical interpretation that destabilizes narrow assumptions about biblical creation. What makes the work unique is its deep engagement with contemporary biology and ecological science. The result is a book that calls forth praise, an ethic of responsibility and, of course, wonder.”
Each Sunday we will substitute one of the lectionary readings for one of the creation scriptures. Our adult education time, which will be after the service and facilitated by Paul Mazur, we will explore the scientific and contemporary environmental dimensions. Reading the book is not necessary for our adult ed program. Our liturgy will follow an adaptation from A New Zealand Prayerbook. It promises to be a thoughtful and engaging exploration of a very timely topic!
